The opulent building, designed by architect Charles Garnier, sits at the nexus of several wide boulevards laid out in Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann's grand redesign of Paris in the mid-19th century. It was memorialized in Gaston Leroux's 1909 story The Phantom of the Opera, a book that inspired Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical blockbuster by the same name.
